Sphere, large cube, Collins spear, diamond or crushed ice? Find out which ice shape suits each drink and why it matters for taste and dilution.
Ice is not a detail, it is an ingredient. Its shape and size decide how quickly a drink cools, how much it dilutes and how it looks in the glass. Here is how to choose the right ice for every type of drink.

The basic rule is simple: the smaller the contact surface with the liquid, the slower the ice melts. A large, dense piece cools steadily and dilutes little, while small or crushed ice cools very quickly but also melts just as quickly.
A sphere has the smallest surface area for its volume, so it melts the slowest. It is the classic choice for whisky, a Negroni or an Old Fashioned, where you want the aromas to stay intense to the last sip. At Ice Lab, spheres come in two sizes, 5.5 cm and 6 cm, to fit your glasses.

The large clear ice cube is the most versatile format. It looks flawless in a rocks glass, cools evenly and does not drown the drink. It is a safe choice for bars that want a consistent standard across the whole cocktail list.

Tall glasses call for tall ice. A Collins spear fills the glass from top to bottom, keeps the carbonation in a Gin & Tonic, Paloma or Mojito and gives a clean, premium-bar look.
Diamond-shaped ice is made for presentation. Its facets reflect the light and turn any drink into a memorable moment, from a spirit served neat to a signature cocktail.
Crushed ice cools almost instantly and creates the texture typical of cocktails such as the Mint Julep, Mai Tai or frozen drinks. Here dilution is part of the recipe, so speed is an advantage.
There is no single ice that is right for every drink. Choose a sphere or a large cube for spirits, a Collins spear for highballs, a diamond for presentation and crushed ice for refreshing cocktails. If you are not sure which format suits you, the Ice Lab team can help you choose.
